The Greater Mahale Ecosystem is a mosaic of miombo woodland, thin riparian forest corridors, larger patches of evergreen forest, and tracts of open grassland and seasonal swamps (McLester et. al. 2019). Mahale Mountains National Park, located on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, contains some of the Mahale Mountains range and is home to the largest known population of eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii).

A chimpanzee glances up, lips wet with a creamy liquid, as it holds a melon-like piece of food.
